Who are the Christadelphians

Updated: Jan 19

The Christadelphians ,

The Christadelphians are a non-Trinitarian millennial Christian denomination that originated in the 19th century, founded by John Thomas in the 1830s in the United States. It is a millennial Christian group whose fellowship is linked by a common understanding of the Bible and Christianity.

The name "Christadelphian" is derived from Greek, meaning "brethren in Christ." The movement emerged in response to the revivalist movements and the religious thought of the time, emphasising a return to what its members view as the original teachings of Christianity as found in the Bible.

Christadelphians hold a number of distinctive beliefs:

  1. Monotheism: They emphasize the belief in one God and reject the traditional Christian view of the Trinity.

  2. Christology: Christadelphians believe that Jesus is the Son of God but not part of a divine Trinity. They teach that he was a human being who lived a sinless life, was crucified, and resurrected, but not pre-existent as God.

  3. Salvation and Atonement: They believe that salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ, along with repentance and baptism. They do not accept the concept of original sin in the traditional sense and emphasise the importance of personal responsibility for sin.

  4. Eschatology: Christadelphians have a strong focus on the second coming of Christ, the establishment of God's Kingdom on Earth, and the resurrection of the dead.

  5. Community and Practice: They practice adult baptism and gather in congregations known as ecclesiae, which operate with a democratic structure. They do not subscribe to the practice of formal clergy; instead, members share teaching and leadership responsibilities.

  6. Biblical Authority: The Bible is viewed as the sole authority for faith and practice, and Christadelphians actively encourage personal study of Scripture.

Christadelphians are present in various countries around the world and have a strong emphasis on community, evangelism, and living in accordance with their understanding of Biblical teachings.
